History of Liceo Garibaldi

In 1902, it was decided that the overpopulated scholastic institution of Liceo Vittorio Emanuele had to be divided. So, some of the classes went to occupy the Maddalena building situated near Piazza Garibaldi, known as "Le Duchesse," that as an ancient monastery took part in the Opere Pie group. The division came about because of a telegram sent by the superior authority of Professor L. Ricciardi, who approved that "...the classes of Greek, Latin, Italian, Philosophy, History, and Natural History must be sent to the Maddalena location," as well as naming the teachers who were to be sent there with each class. Professor F. Giuelle was nominated as the first headmaster of the school, later serving from the years 1902 to 1905. On July 10th, 1905, the Prefect of the Province of Naples, officially granted the school's autonomy in a telegram sent to Headmaster Giuelle. At the time of its granted autonomy, the school had 19 classes and 578 students. Today, under the current headmaster of the school, Professor Laura Colantonio, there are

History of the San Maria Maddelena Monastery

In the first years of the thirteen hundreds, in an isolated area rich with villas, the Church and the Hospital of the Annunziata was built. Near that area, a monastery called San Maria Maddalena was also constructed for the wife of King Robert. It was a monastery destined to become one of the most important in Naples. Then, in 1489, the monastery became temporary home to King Alfonso, who moved the nuns to the nearby Church of San Caterina a Formiello Later, though, Alfonso's successor, once again returned the monastery to the nuns. In the 18th Century, the building was enlarged further and with the addition of beautiful stone detailing we can see today why it is one of the most important historical monuments in the city.

The School's Namesake: Who was Giuseppe Garibaldi?

Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian military and political figure who lived from July 4, 1807 to June 2, 1882. In his twenties, he joined the Carbonari Italian patriot revolutionaries and had to flee Italy after a failed insurrection. Garibaldi took part in the War of the Ferrapos and the Uruguayan Civil War leading the Italian Legion, and afterwards returned to Italy as a commander in the conflicts of the Risorgimento.

He has been given the nickname the "Hero of the Two Worlds" in tribute to his military expeditions in both South America and Europe. For all of his efforts, he is considered a national hero by the Italian people and his name is one that is much respected in the country.

Scholastic Activities

PON: A set of afternoon activities that are provided by the UE Commission, involving: English, Italian, Astronomy, Mathematics, and among other subjects.

Fulbright Program: A relationship between the American and Italian governments that places a mother-tongue English Teaching Assistant (ETA) from the United States in classes with the school's English teachers. The purpose of this program is to, of course, improve the English language skills of the students but, also, to increase the solidarity and knowledge between the American and Italian cultures.

Theatre Course: This is an after-school course that allows students to learn about the theatre and also to prepare a final performance of their own for the school.

Napolican: A recently founded school association where students come together in and outside of school to celebrate the Neapolitan and American cultures. Together with their English teachers, Fulbright ETA, and often in collaboration with the American Consulate in Naples, members participate in several group activities (art exhibits, cooking classes, out-of-school excursions, etc.) where they can practice their English, as well as enjoy their great city and culture.

Sport activities: The students are involved in sport activities such as volleyball, athletics, football etc and train to participate in the school competitions.

Learning Together: The Student-Led "Cogestione"

During a week-long program of presentations, outings, and performances, students of Liceo Garibaldi work with their teachers and headmaster to realize a creative approach to learning together. This student-led "congestion," as it is called, allows students and teachers to plan a period of unique lessons and lectures based on a particular theme.
